Japanese Folk Songs for Guitar

Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago

Saturday, 1 pm  October 13, 2018

Japanese folk songs of the 1800's were written for traditional instruments of the time. These songs have subtle, but beautiful haunting melodies based on various Japanese musical scales. This gives them a different sound, and the songs sound great on the guitar. We’ll learn two or three instrumental songs - some simple, some more challenging, by working through tab notation. If you are an intermediate player and want to move beyond strumming, this is a great opportunity to learn to pluck individual melody notes using your fingers or a pick. For more advanced guitar players, this is an opportunity to try something new and add to your repertoire. For intermediate through advanced level players.

We will emphasize efficient fingering positions, and techniques that can be applied to other styles of playing. Proficiency with bar chords will be helpful. Let’s learn something different! Listen to  Tabaru Zaka  and  Inshu-Inaba
